Herb & Spices
Herbs and spices have been used human diet since ancient times for a variety of purposes. Herbs are “plants with leaves, seeds or flowers” and spices are “dried seeds, fruits, roots, barks or vegetative substances” used in nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive.
The ancient cuneiforms which have been found in Mesopotamia in the fertile Tigris and Euphrates valleys are the records of herb and spices’ long history.
Herbs and spices have been used alone or in blends for different purposes like food or medicine since the ancient times to our present day and have an important role as a food ingredient in our kitchens. They can either be used for flavour or can be contributed to food for colour and variety. They also have other features like replacing or reducing salt and sugar in our foods.
